About the role

As a Cloud Solutions Expert, you will be responsible for the overall development and design of a cost-effective hosting solution and implement a scalable, robust, high-performance cloud-based Infrastructure solution that meets the needs of CDIC’s mandate applications / Infrastructure using cloud technologies.

 

This role can be performed from our Ottawa or Toronto offices, following a hybrid model approach. This is a full-time permanent opportunity. 

 

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES required for this role

  • Design, plan, and deploy enterprise-scale Azure solutions, including secure landing zones with guardrails (Policy, Management Groups, RBAC, naming/tagging, subscription strategy) to enable scalable growth.

  • Establish cost governance and FinOps practices (budgets, alerts, reservations, rightsizing, autoscaling) while applying Zero Trust principles and security baselines across identities, devices, networks, applications, and data; leverage Microsoft Defender for the Cloud for posture management and Microsoft Sentinel for threat detection and response.

  • Facilitate architecture reviews and lead technical design workshops with stakeholders; translate requirements into reference architectures for web/app/data tiers (12-factors, microservices where applicable) and define non-functional requirements (availability, performance, RPO/RTO).

  • Build Infrastructure as Code (ARM/Bicep/Terraform) and implement CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps/GitHub Actions) for repeatable deployments; automate operations (patching, scaling, backups, configuration) using PowerShell, Azure CLI, DSC, and Azure Automation Runbooks.

  • Implement end-to-end observability with Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, and alerting dashboards to ensure performance, reliability, and proactive issue detection.

  • Lead technical discussions with that drive decisions and implementation approaches. 

  • Review and manage technical requirements and business functional requirements to establish new cloud platforms. 

  • Design architectures with Microsoft Azure to meet CDIC’s technical, security, and business needs.

  • Design, plan and execute on implementation plans to deploy Azure infrastructure and move workloads to Azure. 

  • Work with the business and partners to design a full-stack solution using best practices to fully integrate CDIC’s existing and future cloud infrastructure, ensuring it meets all business requirements. 

  • Administer, monitor, and maintain CDIC services within its Azure tenant and office 365. 

  • Overseeing and implementing cloud security. 

  • Completing the integration of new applications into the cloud environment. 

  • Offering training and guidance to all whose roles brings them into contact with the cloud structure. 

  • Management of usage of space in the cloud and making sure the structure is operating at full efficiency. 

  • Conducting migration, where necessary, to bring tools and other elements into the cloud. 

  • Working with virtualization technologies to achieve effective server management for the business. 

  • Propose suggestions and best practices to optimize customers’ cloud presence, performance, security, and cost. 

  • Responsible for the evaluation of technical risks and mapping out mitigation strategies.

  • Carry out debugging, troubleshooting, modifications, and unit testing of solutions built on the CDIC’s on premises and cloud platforms. 

  • Develop new specs and, documentation; and partake in the development of technical procedures and user support guides. 

  • Evaluate cloud applications, hardware, and software at regular intervals. 

  • Develop and organize cloud systems and work closely with IT security to monitor the company’s cloud privacy. 

  • Provide prompt response to technical issues in a professional manner. 

  • Provide complex Local Area Network (LAN) administration functions, including network operating system privileges, infrastructure configuration, network problem troubleshooting, security, performance monitoring, maintenance of physical data center hardware and computing appliances. 

  • Monitor network performance and system logs and adjust system resource allocation to ensure maximum performance. 

  • Deploy, test, support and maintain corporate applications for deployment via various deployment techniques utilizing tools such as but not limited to; SCCM, Group Policy, scripts, PDQ, App-v.

  • Provide technical expertise in the implementation, support and operation of CDIC’s disaster recovery plan, through the planning and design of the related infrastructure. and the development of recovery and other procedures related to server operation and maintenance, to ensure the back-up and recover ability of corporate information. 

  • Assist or lead with new IT projects by investigating options and making recommendations as to what systems, hardware and software changes are appropriate for CDIC.

SKILLS you bring 

  • Computer Science Degree or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of Microsoft Azure design and delivery experience, including cloud architectures (web, application, database), Azure Resource Manager, Virtual Networks, Virtual Machines, Blob Storage, Azure Active Directory/Entra ID, Governance (RBAC, networking architectures, cost controls), landing zones (Policy, Management Groups, naming/tagging, subscription strategy), Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights, and Microsoft Sentinel.

  • 5+ years of experience in networking, directory services, databases, operating systems, storage (SAN), VMware virtualization, disaster recovery planning and operations, and 2nd/3rd level SME support.

  • Experience with scripting and automation (PowerShell, CLI, DSC, ARM/Bicep/Terraform), configuration management (Puppet, Chef, or PowerShell DSC), Azure Automation, Azure Site Recovery, Azure Migrate, and infrastructure provisioning.

  • Experience with Microsoft Entra Conditional Access, PIM, identity governance, and understanding of Azure SQL, Azure Functions, Logic Apps, and Azure DevOps.

  • Extensive experience managing and optimizing Windows Server environments, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, VMware, Azure Cloud Services, Office 365, SQL, Group Policy, access control lists, WDS, and WSUS.

  • Strong knowledge of storage and backup solutions (Veeam, NetApp, Azure Backup, Site Recovery) and ITSM best practices (change, problem, incident management).

  • Knowledge of enterprise infrastructure including directories, on-premises hosting (vSphere/Hyper-V), data centre storage and networking, cloud system engineering principles, disaster recovery frameworks, data storage modelling, multi-region architectures, global connectivity, and Azure security/compliance requirements.

  • Relevant certifications considered assets: Microsoft Certified Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, VMware Certified Professional, CCNP, CCNA.

  • Strong communication skills for engaging both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ability to translate requirements, and provide clear explanations.

  • Ability to work independently or in a team, manage vendors, handle stress appropriately, solve problems effectively, make informed technical decisions, and demonstrate strong commitment to learning and development.
